Message from the chancellor

Aug. 25, 2008

Dear colleagues,

Missouri University of Science and Technology has a strong heritage of excellence in education and research, yet carries a new name that will allow the university to build on those traditions. Our new name is distinctive, mission-based, and better reflects our national mission and focus.

As we compete for students, faculty, staff and funding, we must build upon our tradition and work together to increase Missouri S&T's reputation as one of the top five technological research universities in the nation. The shifting demographics in Missouri and the Midwest, coupled with declining national student interest in engineering and science, threaten Missouri S&T's future viability. One of our most valuable assets is our reputation. A uniform visual identity and consistent message are the most efficient and effective ways to build on our reputation. Technological research universities are vital to the nation's economic health. Therefore, it is imperative that Missouri S&T thrive in this globally competitive environment. We must attract more students from outside the state of Missouri in order to maintain our undergraduate and graduate enrollment. At the same time, we must increase research funding and private support to further build our reputation.

Missouri S&T is committed to a consistent identity. The following visual identity and editorial style guides are designed to equip all members of the campus community with the materials they need to ensure the Missouri S&T brand and message are consistent across various media. These materials were developed collaboratively, under the leadership of the Missouri S&T communications office and with input from the Brand Identity Team that was convened to assist with the name change process. Please review and adhere to these guidelines when developing promotional and marketing materials, preparing correspondence, or otherwise promoting Missouri S&T through your various activities. With your assistance and cooperation, Missouri S&T's reputation will continue to grow stronger in the coming years.

Dr. John F. Carney III
