Brand elements: visual identity

The Missouri S&T word mark

Black Missouri S&T, text below

The Missouri S&T word mark (logo) is the primary graphic element for all Missouri S&T marketing materials. This includes all publications such as business cards, letterhead, brochures, newsletters, admissions publications, recruitment materials, summer programs publications, videos, websites and other marketing materials.

The word mark, in ITC Berkeley Oldstyle font, features a bold “S&T” to symbolize our emphasis as a university of science and technology. The stylized ampersand features a miner’s pickaxe symbol that connects with our heritage as the “Missouri School of Mines” and the first technological school west of the Mississippi.

The word mark may be used with or without the words “University of Science & Technology” beneath the “S&T.” However, when using the “Missouri S&T” mark without the additional words, it is important to spell out the full, official name of the university (“Missouri University of Science and Technology”) elsewhere in the document. See the typography entry for more information.

No alteration allowed

The word mark must not be altered in any way. The word mark may not be taken apart, changed in proportion or fonts, or otherwise altered from the versions provided in the Download section, below.

University name

When writing the university’s full name, do not use the ampersand. Instead, write “Missouri University of Science and Technology” and use small caps in place of the lowercase letters, as follows:

For more guidance on using type and text with the logo, see the typography section.

The word mark is designed to stand alone as Missouri S&T’s primary graphic symbol. It should not be used alongside other marks, such as the historic emblem or the Joe Miner mascot. In addition, the word mark must not be altered in any way.

Color applications of the word mark

The use of color with the word mark varies depending on audience and purpose. The goal is to provide the campus flexibility in usage while ensuring consistency in the brand identity. Therefore, the use of color for the word mark is limited to:

  • Silver and gold, which are the official school colors
  • Green, the third color historically associated with the university because of our St. Pat’s Celebration
  • Gold
  • Silver

Additional guidance on color usage will be posted soon. In the meantime, if you need assistance or guidance on color usage, please contact the communications office at comm@mst.edu.

Using the word mark with department names

For apparel, mailings and other materials, departments, student groups or other campus groups may wish to incorporate their organization’s name with the word mark. (Guidelines for business cards, letterhead and envelopes are available here.) To help ensure a consistent look among campus organizations, the following guidelines should be used.

  • First, download the “no text” word mark that you wish to use. (The department or organization name will be positioned in place of the “University of Science & Technology” text below the full, “with text below” word mark.)
  • Place the department or organization name directly beneath the word mark. Use Univers font for your department or organization name to distinguish it from the official word mark. (If you don’t have Univers font on your computer, you can substitute the Arial font.)
  • If the department or organization name can fit on one line, use 28-point font (see example below).
  • If the department or organization name requires two lines, use 24-point font (see example below).
  • Use 1-point horizontal lines to set apart the department or organization name from the word mark. The lines should extend 1/8 inch beyond the first and last letters of the organization’s name.

Examples:

Organization name on one line (Staff Council, Career Opportunities Center, Information Technology)

Organization name on two lines (Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering)
