Usage Policy: Joe Miner Image Joe Miner is the official mascot of the Missouri
University of Science and Technology. Rugged and individualistic, Joe Miner
personifies the spirit of the old west and the determination to succeed. His
character is closely tied with the school's founding in 1870 as the University
of Missouri School of Mines and Metallurgy. Official pose: The Joe Miner graphic's official pose shows the mascot in
a walking stance, one leg stepping forward. With gun holstered on his hip, Joe
swings a pickax while balancing a slide rule across one shoulder. This image
was originally hand drawn and was recently updated as a vector-based image for
better reproduction. Both versions are available for usage. Head image: In addition to the official pose, a close-up,
vector-based image of Joe Miner's head is available for official
use. Primary usage: Joe Miner's primary usage is to promote intercollegiate
athletics and Missouri S&T's sports programs in general. Recognized student
organizations, student design teams and the MSM-Missouri S&T Alumni
Association also use the Joe Miner image, and the image is also used with some
student recruitment publications. Because the Joe Miner image is closely
associated with Missouri S&T sports, student activities, alumni activities
and student recruitment activities, academic and administrative units should
not incorporate the Joe Miner graphic into their graphic identities. The mascot is never to be reproduced, modified or used in such a way as to
compromise the reputation and educational standards of the Missouri University
of Science and Technology. Such use could result in formal or legal action
against the offending individual(s) by the Missouri University of Science and
Technology. Usage procedure for external entities:
All external businesses, organizations, individuals or entities interested in
using Joe Miner, must contact the Communications Department at (573) 341-4328
or email news@mst.edu to obtain prior approval.
All requests must be made in writing (via mail, fax or email) to the Director
of Communications and contain a brief statement summarizing the intended use of

The value of a mascot: While Joe Miner is not to be used as part of academic or
administrative graphic identities, the mascot graphic is of great value to the
university as a whole. Team mascots provide high visibility in a community and
help develop a sense of pride among alumni, students and other audiences. In
addition, a team mascot can provide entertainment value. Usage of the original (hand-drawn) Joe: The hand-drawn Joe may be reproduced in color
only. Usage of the new (vector-based) Joe: The vector-based Joe may be used in color, black
and white, and as line art. Altering Joe's image: Altering the image of either Joe Miner graphic is
prohibited. Altered images of the Joe Miner graphic should not be used in any
Missouri S&T materials, including brochures, newsletters, websites or
letterhead. |
