Our Name
What’s in a name?
We can’t expect our peers to recognize the university’s name and use it
correctly if we, as a campus, don’t use it correctly.
Missouri University of Science and Technology: The full formal
name of the university should be used on first reference in all formal,
official communications and marketing materials. NOTE: the “and” is
always spelled out. Do not substitute the ampersand (&).
The only acceptable use of the ampersand in the full formal name is in the
Missouri S&T signature mark, which uses the wording “University of Science
& Technology” beneath the “Missouri S&T” mark. In that instance, the
use of the ampersand is a design element.
Missouri S&T: The abbreviated university name may be used
on second reference in official communications to outside audiences or on first
reference to familiar audiences (alumni, current students, faculty, staff).
S&T: This shortened version of the abbreviated name is acceptable
for use in headlines, photo captions or other tight spots. It is also
acceptable in writing about Missouri S&T athletics.
MST/mst: Acceptable ONLY in web and email addresses in
lowercase (mst.edu) and for use in forms on computerized applications in all
capital letters, such as PeopleSoft, that limit the number of characters.
NEVER use MUST, MO S&T, M S&T or any other abbreviation.
University of Missouri System: Spell out the system name,
capitalizing the word “System,” when referring to all four UM campuses on first
reference.
UM System: Acceptable on second reference.
University of Missouri-Columbia: Acceptable on first reference.
UMC, MU or University of Missouri are acceptable on second
reference.
University of Missouri-St. Louis: Acceptable on the first
reference. UMSL is acceptable on second reference.
University of Missouri-Kansas City: Acceptable on the first
reference. UMKC is acceptable on second reference.
